Fair warning: The song in this trailer is an earworm. If you can get through the rest of your day without it stuck in your head, I envy you and would like to understand your powers.
But there are worse things to be humming! Encanto, Disney’s upcoming animated feature, has songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a very sweet story about the Madrigals, a family who live magical lives in their magical home. Everyone has a special magical gift—except Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz). But she might be the only one who can save the day when something goes terribly wrong.
There’s so much to like here, from the glow of magic to the healing arepa con queso to the little cousin who talks to animals. “The rats told me everything” is maybe the greatest line in this trailer, coming as it does from a pint-sized kid who then warns a jaguar not to eat the helpful rats. Also, there’s a capybara! Which makes this movie automatically great.
Encanto comes from directors Byron Howard (Zootopia) and Jared Bush (Howard’s co-director on Zootopia) and co-director Charise Castro Smith, who wrote the screenplay along with Bush. The cast includes Diane Guererro (Doom Patrol) and Jessica Darrow as Mirabel’s sisters; Angie Cepeda (Jane the Virgin) and Wilmer Valderrama (Gray’s Anatomy) as Mirabel’s parents; and John Leguizamo as Bruno. No one voices the house, but whoever figured out all the ways to animate its personality is clearly a genius.
Encanto arrives in theaters on November 24, 2021.
